How long before you can get your pokemon back from an in game trade (soul silver)?

do you have to wait a day (in the game) or can you never get the pokemon back and stick with the one you traded it for. I traded my haunter so that it would evolve for a xatu but i'm wondering if i can trade the xatu for it so i can get it back.
